Each month, we put the spotlight on the progress of various projects in and around the state of Victoria. This time, we look at the Infrastructure sector and the latest updates from three projects: the Whittlesea Road Rehabilitation, the Warrnambool Line Upgrade and the M80 Ring Road Upgrade.

City of Whittlesea Road Rehabilitation

Project: Road rehabilitation

Status: Construction

Developer: Whittlesea City Council

Contractor: Metro Asphalt Pty Ltd, Infracon Group Pty Ltd, Conbi Contractors Pty Ltd, Little Rock Road Services Pty Ltd, Fercon Civil Construction & Engineering Pty Ltd

Construction Start Date: 1 January 2020

Construction End Date: 31 December 2022

Value: $15 million

Construction has commenced on this $15 million road renovation across the city of Whittlesea – with the aim to cut residents’ commuting time and improve congestion. Construction includes: construction of an E6 freeway, duplication of Bridge Inn Road from two to four lanes between Plenty Road and Yan Yean Road, duplication of Epping Road from two to four lanes between Craigieburn Road East and Memorial Avenue, and duplication of Childs Road in Mill Park from Beaumont Crescent to Prince of Wales Avenue.

This full-scale rehabilitation will cover new pavement, piping, landscaping and more. The tenderers have been named as Metro Asphalt Pty Ltd, Infracon Group Pty Ltd, Conbi Contractors Pty Ltd, Little Rock Road Services Pty Ltd, Fercon Civil Construction & Engineering Pty Ltd. Warrnambool Line Upgrade

Project: Rail upgrade

Status: Builder appointed

Developer: Public Transport Victoria, V/Line Pty Ltd, Rail Project Victoria

Design Builder: Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd

Construction Start Date: 2nd quarter 2020

Construction End Date: 4th quarter 2021

Value: $114 million

The $114 Warrnambool Line revival will upgrade regional passenger train lines in Victoria, leading to more reliable services and creating over 1,000 jobs.

Construction will include building a new crossing loop, signalling upgrades between Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool, level crossing and pedestrian crossing upgrades, and new train stabling facilities at Warrnambool – just to scratch the surface. Appointed builder Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd will have a lot on their hands as construction begins in 2020’s second quarter.

M80 Ring Road Upgrade

Project: Road upgrade – Prince Freeway (northern section)

Status: Builder appointed

Developer: M80 Ring Road Project

Design Builder: CPB Contractors Pty Ltd

Construction Start Date: 2nd quarter 2020

Construction End Date: 1st quarter 2023

Value: $368.5 million

Valued at a whopping $368.5 million, the M80 Ring Road Upgrade will enhance the 38km of freeway leading from the Princes Freeway in Laverton North through to the Greensborough Highway in Greensborough. This huge and exciting project will include the following works across three development stages:

  • New lanes in each direction between Sydney Road and Edgars Road
  • Installing a freeway management system
  • Extending on and off-ramps at Sydney Road to give drivers more time to merge
  • Building new on and off-ramps at Edgars Road to improve safety
  • Improving access from the Hume Freeway to the M80 and Edgars Road
  • Installing ramp-metering technology to manage the flow of traffic onto the freeways
  • Upgrading the cycling and pedestrian bridge.

Construction is set to commence second-quarter 2020 – we can’t wait to see what comes next from this massive build!
