Each month, we put the spotlight on the progress of various projects in and around the state of Victoria. This time, the latest updates from three major Health projects.

Wonthaggi Hospital Expansion

Project: Wonthaggi Hospital expansion

Status: Design complete

Developer: Bass Coast Health

Architects: Lyons

Construction Begins: February 2020

Construction Complete: Early 2023

Value: $115 million

Ensuring regional communities are afforded the same standard of care as their urban counterparts, the Wonthaggi hospital expansion will be redeveloped to meet existing needs and safeguard the effectiveness of the hospital into the future, with the local population set to increase by 55% by 2031.

The project began construction in February 2020 and is slated for completion by early 2023. The newly expanded hospital will include three new operating theatres and procedure rooms, 18 more treatment spaces in a new emergency department and a 32-bed inpatient ward. Capacity for the total number of patients treatable per year will increase to 26,000.

Early Parenting Centres Across Victoria

Project: Early parenting centres expansion and upgrade
Status: Upgrade works have begun
Developer: The Department of Health and Human Services

Construction Begins (Upgrades): Mid 2020

Construction Complete (Upgrades): Mid 2021

Construction Begins (New Centres): Early 2021

Construction Complete (New Centres): Early 2024
Value: $123 million

Victoria’s early parenting centres provide specialist support, advice and services to families state-wide with children in the bracket of 0-4 years. The $123 million project will triple the number of early parenting centres in Victoria, meaning support services will now be available to more than 5,000 extra families each year.

There are two distinct elements to the scope of the project. Stage 1 will focus on the upgrade of two existing centres, the Queen Elizabeth Centre in Noble Park and the Tweddle Child and Family Health Service in Footscray. Stage 2 will see the building of seven new early parenting centres based in Ballarat, Bendigo, Casey, Frankston, Geelong, Whittlesea and Wyndham.

The new centres are putting high-quality early support within easy geographic reach for more Victorians. Those requiring in-centre residential services now have this more readily available as the number of residential units will increase from 43 to 100.

Latrobe Regional Hospital Expansion

Project: Latrobe Regional Hospital Expansion, Stage 3A
Status: Planning
Developer: Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and Latrobe Regional Hospital (Project Partner)
Architect: Billard Leece Partnership
Construction Begins: Mid 2021
Construction Complete: Late 2023
Value: $217 million

The third stage of the Victorian Government expansion of Latrobe Regional Hospital is preparing to go underway. This stage will expand the maternity unit, provide three new operating theatres, 44 new beds, 14 new medical and surgical beds, six new intensive care unit beds and an extra emergency bay.

The development is part of the wider government aim of improving access to quality healthcare services throughout the Gippsland region and follows Stage 1 and Stage 2, which delivered a larger emergency department and new cardiac facilities.

In total, Stage 3A is expected to generate 600 construction jobs along with 200 jobs at the hospital itself, providing a much-needed boost for the local economy.
