3 tips to make you shine when approaching recruiters

The term “personal brand” has been thrown around a lot in the last five years, and though you may be sick of hearing the coined phrase, there is a reason you keep hearing about it. Everyone has a personal brand, and unless nurtured, it can be the reason you do not get the career advancement you desperately require.
When dealing with Recruiters, your personal brand could be the make or break of the relationship. Recruiters can deal with hundreds of candidates a month, and in order to stand out, you need to be exceptional. Below are 3 (simple) ways to stand out from the crowd- and they are all easily obtainable.

1) Be Prepared
When you contact a recruiter, have your A game ready! They will expect you are prepared and have everything at your fingertips including times available to attend interviews, references suitable to back you up and more importantly a current and relevant resume ready to send should it be requested. If you contact a recruiter and are unable to discuss facts off the top of your head, have a resume ready to be sent or have no times available to meet, you may dilute your credibility and lose the chance of working with that recruiter.
Did you know recruiters love when candidates provide proof they are organised and have attention to detail? It is one thing to write it on your application; it is another to provide evidence during your job search.
2) Be polite and open
Recruiters cannot help you if you do not give them the information they require, so when speaking to them on the phone or in person answer the questions as precise as possible without waffling. Don’t make the mistake of asking them to refer to your resume, if they are asking you questions it is because they want to discuss your background in more depth than what was written on a few pages of paper.
Make sure you remember your manners when dealing with anyone (including recruiters). People are more likely to assist you if you are polite and give them the chance to offer you assistance or direct you to someone who can.
Did you know a common issue recruiters find, is candidates assume they can just look at their resume and get all the information they need? The reality is, most candidates do not have a professionally created resume, and as such are unaware exactly what is needed to sell themselves correctly and miss out on vital information recruiters require.
3) Be loyal
Want a recruiter to work with you and find you the perfect job? Offer to work with on recruiter exclusively. Recruiters will work extra hard if they know they are the only ones who can place you. When you go out to too many recruiters, you are diluting your chance of being assisted to a recruiter’s full capacity.
Did you know that going out to as many recruiters as possible can lower your chances of being placed? That is because recruiters gain a “finders fee” when they place you with a client, and if you are working with a large number of recruiters, they may all assume someone else will find you a role and not work hard to assist you.
