Each month, we put the spotlight on the progress of various projects in and around the state of Victoria. This time, we look at Education and the latest updates from projects at Victoria and La Trobe Universities, as well as Dinjerra Primary School.

Victoria University

Project: Victoria University Academic Tower

Status: Contract Awarded/Builder Appointed

Tender Winner: Probuild Constructions Ltd

Structural Engineer: IrwinConsult

Construction Start Date: April 2019   Construction End Date: Late 2020   Value: $110m

Planning for the proposed 29-storey academic tower at Victoria University has picked up pace in recent months with Probuild being appointed as builder following the tender process.

Probuild has a history of tackling education projects, including work on a Business and Economics hub at the University of Melbourne. Now taking on this exciting project for Victoria University, the new tower will be fitted out with 16 levels of lecture theatres, study lounges, breakout areas, ancillary offices, as well as shops and a café on the ground level.

With an estimated value of $110m and construction due to commence in April 2019, this project is certainly one to look out for in the coming months.

La Trobe University

Project: La Trobe University Student Accommodation Units

Status: Tenderers Named

Tenderers: Icon, Multiplex

Architect: Jackson Clements Burrows

Construction Start Date: January 2019

Construction End Date: Early 2020   Value: $65m

With the contract expected to be awarded in December, two tenderers have been named for the refurbishment and upgrading of student accommodation at La Trobe University in Melbourne (Bundoora Campus).

Construction is due to commence early next year, where there will be significant work to improve the facilities at the 1600-bed student accommodation building, along with the construction of new studio units. Work will also be carried out on the reception area, shared bathrooms, and communal kitchen, dining and laundry areas.

Icon and Multiplex are the two organisations that are in line to take on this $65m project.

Dinjerra Primary School

Project: Dinjerra Primary School Redevelopment

Status: Contract Awarded/Builder Appointed

Tender Winner: Commercial Industrial Construction Group (CICG)

Architect: Hede Architects

Structural Engineer: ACOR Kersulting

Civil Engineer: ACOR Kersulting

Construction Start Date: January 2019   Construction End Date: October 2019   Value: $19.5m

There has been some recent movement in the redevelopment of Dinjerra Primary School, with a builder being appointed and the permit being granted to allow construction to commence in 2019.

As a result of additional funding being provided in the previous two State Budgets, the school has been able to raise the funds needed to upgrade and modernise their facilities. Works on this $19.5m project will include:

  • Demolition of the old Light Timber Construction building and sheds,
  • Refurbishment of the library
  • Construction of new administration and classroom buildings.

Commercial Industrial Construction Group (CICG) has been appointed as the builder.
