Each month, we put the spotlight on the progress of various projects in and around the state of Victoria. This time, we are looking at Healthcare and the latest updates from three major hospital projects.

La Trobe University

Project: La Trobe Health and Wellbeing Hub

Status: Contract Awarded/Builder Appointed

Developer/Managing Contractor: Healthscope Operations

Architects: Billard Leece Partnership, SJB Architects, MGS Architects

Construction Start Date: December 2020   Construction End Date: December 2021   Value: $400m

With a builder now appointed, the La Trobe Health and Wellbeing Hub will progress to the design and planning stages throughout 2019. Construction is set to commence next year with delivery in 2021.

As an integral component of The University City of the Future plan, the healthcare hub will offer the local community a new 125-bed sub-acute private hospital, primary healthcare and clinical services as well as an increased scope for aged care, rehabilitation, child care, prosthetics, nursing and psychology.

A Green Star Community development, the project will see contractors adopting environmental best practices. Given the hub will also fortify La Trobe’s global reputation as a leading allied health teaching and research university, it is a formidable project to keep track of over the next couple of years.

Northern Health Hospital

Project: Stage Two Extension

Status: Expressions/Registrations of Interest

Tenderers: Tenders are expected to be invited from selected builders soon

Developer: Department of Health and Human Services

Architect: Newpolis   Construction Start Date: June 2019   Construction End Date: June 2021   Value: $163m

The main works aren’t due to commence until mid-2019, with tenders currently being invited from select builders.

Following on from the completion of Stage 1 in June 2016, the Northern Hospital Stage 2 expansion will increase the tower from three to seven floors, encompassing state-of-the-art facilities to meet the future needs of the local community.

Plans detail an additional 96 medical and surgical beds over the three levels, three new operating theatres, redevelopment of the cardiology ward, a shell floor for future expansion as well as a greater scope for pharmacy and provisions for a helipad.

On completion, the Northern Health Hospital will be at the epicentre of North Melbourne’s healthcare delivery, ensuring improved access for patients as well as optimised services, both new and existing.

Victorian Heart Hospital

Project: Cardiac Hospital Facility

Status: Contract Awarded/Builder Appointed

Tender Winner: John Holland

Developer: Monash Health   Architects: John Wardle Architects, Conrad Gargett

Civil Engineer: AECOM Australia   Structural Engineer: AECOM Australia

Construction Start Date: Late 2019   Construction End Date: Late 2022   Value: $543m

Establishing Australia’s first stand-alone heart hospital is one step closer with John Holland due to start construction by the end of this year and services expected to be operational by late 2022.

The Victorian Heart Hospital will boast world-class care for cardiac patients, consolidating not only the latest treatments but also medical research and training under one roof.

The new hospital will include 195 beds with the capacity to undertake 2000 cardiac surgeries annually, 13,500 cardiac laboratory procedures, 28,300 emergencies and accommodate up to 108,000 consultations.

The project is expected to generate 1,700 construction jobs whilst 90% of the building materials will be sourced from local industries – a great Victorian development to keep an eye on.
