Each month, we put the spotlight on the progress of various projects in and around the state of Victoria. This time, we look at Health and the latest updates from three medical centre and hospital projects.

Monash Medical Centre

Project: Emergency Department Development

Status: Contract Awarded/Builder Appointed

Developer: Department of Health and Human Services

Architect: Newpolis Pty Ltd (Trading as Lyons Architecture)

Builder: Kane Constructions (VIC) Pty Ltd

Construction Start Date: December 2019

Construction End Date:  December 2021

Value: $63.2 million

This project sees Monash Medical Centre redeveloping their emergency department to fit an additional twenty-four department cubicles and treatment spaces, as well as more beds for increased capacity overall. The project also includes a brand-new, dedicated paediatric emergency unit.

Construction is due to commence in December 2019 with a desired completion 2021. This $63.2 million redevelopment covers additional works along Dixon and Clayton street to improve traffic flow and install telecommunications to the new department. With the goal of providing more treatment options and accessibility for emergency care, this is one exciting project to keep an eye on!

Footscray Hospital

Project: Hospital Redevelopment

Status: Tender

Developers: Western Health – Footscray Hospital, Western Health Foundation, Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority, Maribymong City Council, Department of Health and Human Services

Architect: Billard Leece Partnership Pty Ltd

Construction Start Date: 2020

Construction End Date: 2025

Value: $1.6 billion

Starting in 2020, this full redevelopment of the existing hospital space will soon invite tenders from its shortlist in December 2019. With Melbourne’s west coast expected to see a population growth of 60% in the next 20 years, building a bigger and better hospital will open up nearly 200 beds and enable staff to treat around 15,000 more patients each year.

There is also a focus on increasing modern amenities and taking some of the pressure off other hospitals in the area.

While the project is awaiting tender, there is still an open space for a builder to be appointed soon and the organisers are currently looking for registrations of interest.

Sunshine Hospital

Project: Sunshine Hospital Redevelopment

Status: Construction Certification Approved

Developer: Sunshine Hospital (Western Health), Department of Health and Human Services

Architects: Silver Thomas Hanley (VIC) Pty Ltd

Builder: Lendlease Corporation Ltd

Construction Start Date: October 2019

Construction End Date: 1st Quarter 2021

Value: $79.2 million

The Sunshine Hospital redevelopment will reconfigure the existing hospital complex and provide a range of new healthcare facilities to meet the needs of the population. The project includes a new emergency department that will have the capacity to treat an extra 59,000 emergency patients each year, complete with a medical imaging suite, an expanded administration area and 55 new treatment spaces, nine of which are dedicated to children.

The redevelopment is being delivered by the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and is expected to be completed by early 2021.
